Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka) in developing students’ soft skills and character at SMAN 3 Sigli, Pidie Regency. The Independent Curriculum emphasizes learner autonomy, focusing on students’ potential, interests, and talents to foster creative, independent, and character-driven individuals. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the principal, teachers, and students as key informants. The results show that the implementation of the Independent Curriculum at SMAN 3 Sigli has been carried out effectively through activities such as the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5), project-based learning, and enhanced collaboration between teachers and students in extracurricular programs. The curriculum positively impacts the development of students’ soft skills, including communication, teamwork, and leadership, while also shaping their discipline, responsibility, and empathy. However, some challenges remain, particularly regarding limited learning facilities and teachers’ capacity in applying innovative teaching models. Overall, the Independent Curriculum holds great potential for improving students’ character education and soft skills development, provided it is supported by adequate teacher training and educational resources.
